Michael Shanly Charitable Trust

Michael Shanly started his business in 1969 and as it grew and became more successful, he wanted to put something back into the community. Whilst much support was given to worthwhile local events, clubs and organisations over the years, in 1997 The Michael Shanly Charitable Trust (MSCT) was formed to approach this in a more organised fashion.

As Michael recently said, "If you can help people, then why not? Everyone at the Company works very hard to make it a success and we are therefore in this fortunate position where we can finance projects and causes that can make a huge difference to people’s lives."

MSCT now allocates around half a million pounds each year to those in need of a little helping hand – from youth clubs, schools, woodland projects and community events, to centres for adults with physical and learning disabilities. MSCT tends to support those in its core business areas, i.e. Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, London, Oxfordshire and Surrey, but has also helped out in international situations that have touched us, such as the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

MSCT thoroughly considers and researches every application for funding that it receives, which can number 30 to 50 per month. MSCT especially likes to help those who run a tight ship, ensuring as much of the funding as possible reaches the right place. Some just need a little boost or simply some commercial advice or a favour, whilst others receive ongoing support.

CAUSES AND COMMUNITY EVENTS CLOSE TO OUR HEART:

WAMDSAD
We have helped this fantastic sports club for the disabled since 2001. Located in Braywick, Maidenhead, WAMDSAD helps those who want some recreational respite and even those who might want to win a medal or two at the Paralympics.

Thames Valley Adventure Playground
Another of our longstanding supported charities, TVAP (based in Taplow) provides an amazing environment for children and adults with learning and physical disabilities or sensory problems to explore and play. TVAP is also the Shanly Group’s Staff Charity for 2010/2011, with various fundraising events held throughout the year by employees.

Maidenhead Carnival
We have supported this extremely popular community-led event over the years and are very proud to help ensure that this tradition continues.

Sayers Croft
This is a fun and educational outdoor activity centre for children within the woodlands of Surrey. Apart from capital projects that MSCT has been involved in, we provide a Bursary Scheme to ensure that no member of any visiting school class is precluded through financial circumstances. This means that a lot of very disadvantaged children (many of whom have never been into the country in their lives) can visit and stay here. It is a truly special place and the feedback we get from our bursary children is heart-rending.

Rivertime Boat Trust
Three years ago a family who had run a boat business on the Thames for many years decided upon retirement to build a boat specifically to open up the River to the disabled and other groups who needed access assistance to board a boat. Rivertime was born and now wheel chair and other less able can cruise the Thames in this craft. MSCT helped fund the actual boat and now operate a Bursary scheme to enable financially disadvantaged to get 'afloat'.

In 2010 MSCT also supported, amongst others:
