Shrinking your mortgage by downsizing doesn't always have to mean downsizing your home or your lifestyle, as 73-year-old Julie Evans discovered when she purchased a new three-bedroom home at Shanly Homes' Oaks Meadow development. Selling her three-bedroom house in Horsell, the retiree saved money by moving into a modern property in West End, Surrey, which she could enjoy straight away.
She explains: "The new homes at Oaks Meadow meant I could free up equity from my property without having to downsize. Not only did I make money selling my house but being a new-build means it was ready to move into without needing any work doing and is much cheaper to run per month. I didn't want to lose space moving to a new house, as I have 10 grandchildrenwho live all over the country and I love having them to stay with me. The money saved has meant I can afford to treat my whole family to a magical Christmas day out!"
According to Lloyds Bank, 45% of over-55s are reluctant to sell their larger family homes as they feel tied to the community, but this hasn't been a problem for Julie: "I'd lived in the village of Horsell for over 73 years and was worried about leaving that behind. I needn't have though, as the development here has a strong community feel with a complete mix of people from young families to retirees like myself. I was worried I'd be the 'old lady' of the community, but I've become great friends with another lady like myself and I have a lovely family next door with a new born baby."
The charming Surrey village of West End offers a myriad of leisure, entertainment and dining options, as well as a thriving community with social events and groups coordinated by residents, which Julie loves.
The local nature reserve, Brentmoor Heath, is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and is perfect for a woodland stroll. West End also benefits from easy access to Woking and Guildford making it an extremely popular location. For families, the area has outstanding schools including Holy Trinity C of E Primary and Gordon's School for secondary students.
Properties at Oaks Meadow have been individually designed, offering spacious living areas and open-plan, fully-integrated kitchens in the heart of the home. Interiors feature luxurious touches and smart home technology throughout, while landscaped gardens provide an outdoor oasis in the warmer months.
Julie enjoys getting out and about and likes the transport connections West End affords, especially when family visit. Excellent transport links include bus routes connecting West End to Guildford, Chobham and Knaphill. West End is less than 3.2 miles from Brookwood train station and under 6 miles from Woking station which has regular services to London Waterloo taking 27 minutes.
