Ice skating in Surrey in the lead up to Christmas

When thinking of a fun and festive activity to do in the lead up to Christmas, there is one thing that immediately springs to mind…ice skating!

We have compiled a list of our favourite outdoor ice rinks in Surrey for you to enjoy this festive season:

Hampton Court Palace

Immerse yourself in the historic atmosphere of Hampton Court Palace as the open-air ice rink returns once again. Located in front of the palace, you will find yourself skating against the backdrop of Henry VIII's legendary home.

Undoubtably one of the country's most scenic skating settings, enjoy spectacular views of the Thames-side Tudor palace. Go for a daytime skate, perhaps followed by a visit to the palace, or choose an evening session when the grounds are flooded with light. For those not wanting to brave the ice, you can tuck into delicious winter treats at the heated Ice Rink Café Bar which offers a selection of comforting hot food and drinks.

It is recommended that you arrive 30 minutes before your session. For parking, public transport recommendations and other general information relating to the palace, click here. The ice rink is open from 22nd November to the 5th January (excluding Christmas Day) 9am until late (10:00 until late on weekdays).

Reigate on Ice

Get your skates on and head down to the leafy surroundings of Priory Park in Reigate, which also recently won the prestigious South and South East in Bloom Gold Award. Over the Christmas period Priory Park will host a mesmerising winter wonderland featuring a large outdoor ice rink.

The ice rink will be held undercover in a Big Top Marquee so visitors can take to the ice whatever the weather. You can also immerse yourself in the Christmassy atmosphere with festive music, food and drink as well as rides, live entertainment and much more.

The ice rink will be open from 28th November until 4th January 2020 but make sure to check their website for times and closures before you plan your trip. You can book tickets here, adults from £12.50, children (under 12) £10 and a family ticket from £40, all tickets include free skate hire.

Guildford Spectrum Ice - Indoor

This isn't the most festive of ice rinks on our list however you will avoid disappointment due to the unpredictable British weather as you would be under a roof! Guildford Spectrum houses an Olympic sized ice rink, so whether you are an experienced ice dancer or like taking it nice and slow, Spectrum Ice is available all year round for you. It is strongly advised you book before your arrival.

The great thing about Spectrum Ice is that not only is it an ice rink but it also hosts an annual Christmas themed performance on ice, a fun experience for the whole family! This year it is Peter Pan on Ice, you can view further information and book tickets here.

Natural History Museum

Located just under an hour from Surrey is the spectacular Natural History Museum, home to London's most enchanting ice rink. The Alfred Waterhouse's buildings, row of trees dripping in fairy lights and majestic Christmas tree in the middle of the ice rink provide a beautiful backdrop, offering you a festive ice-skating experience you won't forget. Once you are all skated-out, an indoor Café Bar and viewing balcony overlooking the ice with picturesque lights is open to all.

Booking in advance is recommended to guarantee your place, tickets from £12.65 for adults and £8.80 children, click here to book tickets and find information for wheelchair-user sessions. The nearest tube is South Kensington so why not make a day of it and do some Christmas shopping in Central London before/after?
