Three autumnal walks in Northwood

Not only does Northwood have fantastic transport connections making it ideal for commuters but it also benefits from being within close proximity of some beautiful outdoor spaces. From the Green Flag award-winning Northwood Gravel Pits, to the serene surroundings of Colne Valley Regional Park, there is something for everyone to enjoy. With the arrival of autumn, we have compiled a list of our favourite autumnal walks in and around Northwood.

Ruislip Woods

Ruislip Woods, less than a 5-minute drive from Northwood, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and national nature reserve. The woods became the first national nature reserve in an urban area of England in May 1997, receiving the Green Flag Award in 2006. It is perfect for a family stroll, with 726 acres of beautiful greenery for children to run around and play in. If you are looking to entertain the kids, try going on a 'Bat Walk'; a number of these take place across the year and are led by local volunteers where small groups can listen out for bats.

Old Park Wood Nature Reserve

Only a 10-minute drive away is another Site of Special Scientific Interest, Old Park Wood Nature Reserve. The reserve spans across 8 hectares of land and is rich with wildlife, such as invertebrates and birds; including all three British species of woodpecker. Make sure to look out for seasonal highlights such as the hawker dragonfly and speckled wood butterfly which thrive in autumn. And when you're finished on your walk, why not stop off for a spot of Sunday lunch at nearby traditional country pub, The Old Orchard.

Rickmansworth Aquadrome

Under a 10-minute drive away is Rickmansworth Aquadrome which covers 41 hectares and is home to a wide variety of facilities. There is something for the whole family; from wooded walks, lakes and play areas, to a café and lush green open spaces. As well as being home to a diverse range of habitats and wildlife, the Aquadrome is often host to lots of sporting activities such as public runs, fun days and watersports.
