A year like no other results in coveted Pride in the Job Award

Project Manager, Andy Goodwin at Shanly Homes' flagship scheme in Maidenhead has had a year he will never forget.

Waterside Quarter is the largest scheme that Shanly Homes has underway currently, and comprises a stunning development of 182 new homes in three stylish apartment blocks, all set along the waterway in the heart of Maidenhead.

Andy was overwhelmed to have been awarded a coveted NHBC Pride in the Job Award in June - the most prestigious industry accolade a site manager can achieve. He comments:

"Getting one of these awards is such an honour and I am more than proud of the team that have been with me throughout the construction of Waterside Quarter. This really is a tribute to all of their hard work too.

"Winning one of these awards is actually even harder if you work for a smaller housebuilder.  The housebuilder giants have so many more resources to put towards an award like this than we do which makes this award even more special for me and the team."

Andy has been with Shanly Homes for almost 18 years and has worked his way up in the industry, coming from a bricklaying background.  He first became a site manager at the age of 31, building just 12 houses in Sussex.  The size and scale of the project that he is running today is a complement to his grit and determination to succeed, whilst keeping his team of 85 staff and contractors motivated to have the same goals as him.

When asked about his challenges on the scheme, Andy said:

"It is not a straightforward build as we have the added complication of a river running right through the scheme, which will be beautiful but has made our job harder.  On December 23rd 2019 the dam which was holding the water upstream burst and we ended up with a huge problem for a few weeks as everything had to be dried out.

"Then of course we have had COVID-19 which has meant challenges with illness, challenges with materials and challenges with staff being off sick."

Andy had his own fight with the virus over Christmas 2020.  Andy remembers:

"It was a tough few day and I missed Christmas altogether last year.  My colleagues were amazing and stepped up, keeping Waterside Quarter ticking along without me.  I have bounced back and I must say its great to back and seeing the scheme coming along at such a fast pace."

When asked about why Waterside Quarter is so special, Andy goes on to say:

"The river may have been our biggest challenge but for the residents that are starting to move in, it is the highlight.  We have a small boat on site and now and again I go out on the water to look up at what we are creating and I feel so immensely proud.  These are beautiful homes in the most idyllic setting right in the heart of a wonderful Berkshire town.  What's not to like?"
