When retired couple Tony and Ann Sicklen, aged 80 and 78, respectively, decided it was time to downsize, they didn't want to compromise on quality or location and took their time to find the perfect home.
Having previously lived in a spacious four-bedroom house with a 140-ft garden in Chertsey, Surrey, they wanted to move to a smaller property that wouldn't require any work, which can be very costly and time-consuming. However, finding the right place wasn't easy, given the couple were after a two-bedroom house, which are notoriously difficult to come by.
"We'd looked at many homes over the course of six years but couldn't find anything suitable. We came up to Shepperton one day and spotted Old Halliford Place, and it's safe to say it was love at first sight. We are extremely lucky to have found a two-bedroom house in such an attractive location - these are so hard to find," said Ann.
Old Halliford Place is a Shanly Homes development, comprising 16 two, three and four-bedroom houses and eight one and two-bedroom apartments, located close to the River Thames in sought-after Shepperton, known for its village feel and links to the cinema industry.
Tony and Ann had previously lived in Shepperton, so knew the area very well. All of their three children, including their families, live within an hour's drive, which meant the location was both desirable and convenient for them. As a former conveyancer, Ann knew exactly what to look for in a property, so the couple put down an offer on a two-bedroom terraced house at Old Halliford Place straight away. They put their old home on the market, and within just three days of being listed, it was sold.
Old Halliford Place made a lasting impression on Tony and Ann because of its interiors and neat, beautifully landscaped garden, which made the decision to buy easy and stress-free.
"We absolutely love our new house. The lounge is our favourite place - it's absolutely gorgeous, with French doors leading onto a patio, beautiful flooring, high ceilings. We only needed to buy some furniture, but the rest had already been done for us, so it was totally headache-free", said Ann.
Their home at Old Halliford Place has been finished to a high specification, a distinctive feature of all Shanly Homes schemes, featuring a fitted kitchen, high-quality integrated appliances and stone work surfaces, as well as sleek white sanitaryware in the bathroom and en-suite. Offering generous living space for relaxing and entertaining, the house also came with allocated parking space.
With Shepperton High Street within walking distance, Old Halliford Place provides easy access to amenities, including shops, parks, medical facilities, and schools. The scheme is a short walk from the River Thames, with Shepperton Marina just five minutes away by car.
She said: "We really like living here. It's a small town but has everything we need for comfortable living, and it's very diverse - our neighbours come from all over the world. We've got a river just down the road, where we go for walks; there's a butcher's and a supermarket nearby, and everything is within walking distance."
Old Halliford Place turned out to be an ideal place for the couple, who wanted to spend their retirement in a tranquil and picturesque setting where they can relax and enjoy life. The town, full of village charm and extensive green spaces, also provides excellent transport links by road and rail, with services from Shepperton train station, a 10-minute walk from the development, to Waterloo in just under an hour.
Heathrow can be accessed in approximately 20 minutes, and the M25 is only 4.4 miles away for journeys further afield.
The price of homes at Old Halliford Place ranges between £325,000 and £800,000. Help to Buy is available on selected properties.
