When new homeowners Samuel and Michael moved into their home at Clock Field in Turners Hill, they could never have imagined they would have timed the purchase of their first property with a large garden at just the right time. Days after the young couple moved in, the country-wide lockdown in the wake of Coronavirus was announced. With the pair living apart at the time, and Samuel living with parents, it would seem that the couple had, not for the first time, struck lucky during their home buying journey.
Samuel, 29, who is from the area, and his partner, Michael, both first-time buyers, had thought they had seen every new build home in a ten-mile radius during their property search before they happened to stumble upon Clock Field. Immediately impressed, the couple arranged to view a three-bedroom terrace house and instantly fell in love, only to find out later that the home they had their heart set on had been snapped up moments before by another buyer.
Samuel explains: "As soon as we did the viewing, we thought 'wow, this is the one'. We made an offer, but when we were told that the home had literally just been reserved, we were heartbroken. We loved the development, so when we were informed that there was another home that had just become available, we couldn't wait to see it."
The property was a former show home, a spacious three-bedroom semi-detached house with a sought-after south-facing garden. Samuel continues: "We couldn't believe our luck. Not only did it have the large garden facing south we had always wanted but it was bigger than the home we initially made an offer on too, and it came with a garage."
In addition, the couple, who had been left disappointed by other homes in the area, were blown away with the high-quality finish of the property. Every house at Clock Field features beautifully appointed shaker-style kitchens with integrated Siemens/Zanussi appliances. Master bedrooms are equipped with luxury en-suite bathrooms and fitted wardrobes (also available in second bedrooms).
But it was thoughtful features such as high ceilings, large windows and stone worktops in the kitchen that the couple fell in love with, and, which they say, made all the difference. Samuel said: "The quality of the finish was clear straight away and nothing else we had seen had come close to this. When the sale was agreed, we were over the moon."
To purchase the property the couple used the government's Help to Buy scheme, requiring just a 5% deposit to secure their dream home. The couple later moved into their spacious new house just days before the lockdown came into effect. Samuel said: "We were fortunate to be able to move when we did as were living apart and with other people at the time. At least in our new home we have lots of room, privacy and a large garden for outside space and fresh air."
Few could have predicted the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic but online property search engines, along with leading agents, have since reported increases in demand for homes with outside space and properties in countryside locations. Homes in attractive village settings with excellent transport links, such as Turners Hill, have become increasingly desirable among city dwellers, who may now be spending more time working from home and recognise the benefits of living in a countryside location.
Clock Field, which comprises 33, three, four and five bedroom homes, in the quaint West Sussex village of Turners Hill, is just a short distance from bustling East Grinstead. The village, which boasts independent retailers such as a butcher, is also home to many listed buildings with some dating back to the 17th and 18th century. Along with a range of leisure amenities close by, its location also benefits from being on the doorstep of the expansive High Weald Area of Natural Beauty (AONB), which is renowned for its countryside walks and attractive woodland and farmland landscapes between West Sussex and Kent.
The development also boasts fantastic transport connections. For commuters, London Victoria is under an hour by train from East Grinstead station, while the M23 and M25 are accessible by road for journeys further afield. Gatwick Airport is also just 15 minutes' drive away.
